What is counselling?

Counselling is a form of talking therapy that gives you dedicated, confidential time with a trained professional. It’s a space that belongs entirely to you — to explore what’s on your mind, to say things out loud that you might never say elsewhere, and to begin to understand yourself more deeply.

It isn’t about being fixed, advised, or told what to do. It’s about being genuinely heard, perhaps for the first time in a long time.

What can counselling help with?

People come to counselling for all kinds of reasons, and there is no threshold you need to reach to deserve support. Common reasons include:

  • Anxiety or worry

  • Low mood, sadness, or depression

  • Relationship difficulties — this could be with a partner, family member, friend, or colleague

  • Bereavement, loss, and grief

  • Low self-esteem, self-criticism, or people-pleasing tendencies

  • Identity questions

  • Life transitions

  • A general feeling of being 'stuck' or lost

  • Past experiences that continue to affect the present

  • Work-related stress or burnout

You may not recognise yourself in any of these, and that’s OK, too. If something is weighing on you, it’s worth talking about.

Are my problems 'serious enough' for counselling?

You might be wondering if counselling is only for people in acute distress. But in reality, people come to therapy at all stages. Ths could be at a time of crisis, or it could be that you feel quietly stuck or disconnected from yourself.

There's no such thing as an issue 'too small' for therapy. I believe the fact that you’re here, reading this, is reason enough to reach out.
